Sailing Again...

Winter draws to a close. Sort of.

We headed out for the long Labour weekend, the traditional start of the sailing season in NZ, and traditionally crap weather. And it didn't disappoint. A mixture of no wind, a little bit of good wind, and a dose of way too much wind. But at least we were sailing!

So we had one great day.

Crew hard at work in a howling millpond.

The autopilot works! Finally free from the helm when short-handed.
Motor-sailing under jib only.

Sarah earns her keep, sorting out a fouled halyard.

Happy to be (motor) sailing again!

25 knots on the nose.

Becs pays tribute to Neptune...   Gusting to 35 knots.

  1. Mark here, Josh and Larry Doheny's nephew. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see these photographs of Kamalii in action, out on the water, where she truly belongs. Love this post and indeed ALL the posts — the unfolding story of your journey in bringing this beloved boat back to life is fascinating. Thrilled to see that all your hard work is paying off so brilliantly. Bravo!

  2. Cheers, Mark. Off sailing again with a bunch of friends this Saturday. I'm hoping we'll have the weather (and crew) to throw up all the sails. I hope Larry is smiling, wherever he is.... :-)

    1. I'm sure Larry's smiling, Jim. Thinking of him especially today, which is Veteran's Day in the U.S. I'm posting the following on Facebook:

Remembering my Uncle Larry Doheny, a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He served with distinction as Lieutenant Commander on the Hellcat submarine USS Flying Fish and saw extensive action in the Pacific. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Flying_Fish_%28SS-229%29
